Porsche Cayenne Coupe confirmed for 2019, will take on Audi Q8

Audi is one of the newer entrants in the coupe-like SUV segment, with its new Q8. The Audi Q8 takes on the likes of the BMW X6 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe. Now, though, it’s going to be getting a new competitor and it may be its toughest — the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Coupe.¬†Autocar recently caught some spy photos of the new Cayenne Coupe and it’s officially coming in 2019.¬†(we don’t own the photos but you can see them here)

Porsche has been teasing the idea of a coupe version of its Cayenne SUV for a long time. While it was always a sort of “will they/won’t they?” type deal, as Porsche never really committed to it, it seems inevitable now. The BMW X6 is getting yet another generation, Mercedes-Benz is going to make another GLE-Class Coupe and now there’s the all-new Audi Q8. So a Porsche Cayenne Coupe, regardless of what Porsche-philes want, is a must-have for the brand’s lineup.

While Porsche is a purist’s brand, one whose SUVs makes its fans cringe, it’s probably the only German brand that has any right to make a coupe-like SUV. While BMW, Mercedes and Audi make fine driving SUVs, ones that belie their size and heft, it’s really only the Cayenne in its class that can genuinely feel “sporty”. So of all the big German family haulers, the Porsche Cayenne is the most deserving of a coupe iteration.

As far as looks are concerned, the Audi Q8 is probably the more handsome of the two cars. From what we’ve seen in these new photos from Autocar, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe looks like a lobotomized Cayenne. It just seems like it has the back of its head cut off. So it’s not great looking, which is kinda of annoying because the standard Cayenne is very handsome. Still, the Audi Q8 is a much better looking car.

Though, the Cayenne Coupe will likely wipe the floor with the Q8 in terms of performance and handling. The standard Cayenne is the best driving SUV in its class, so if Porsche makes the Coupe version even sportier, its competition doesn’t stand a chance.

We’re interested to see what becomes of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long as it will debut later this year.

I've been in love with cars since I was a kid, specifically German cars. Now I get to drive them talk about them on the internet.
