There’s no question, the most important car in Audi’s lineup right now is the e-tron. It’s the brand’s first-ever, all-electric car and it just so happens to be an SUV that’s capable of around 245 miles of pure electric range. That makes it a huge deal not only for Audi but for the industry. So, naturally, the Audi e-tron is here at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, strutting its electric stuff.
It looks good on the auto show floor, wearing its Antigua Blue Metallic paint and launch-edition wheels. What’s disappointing is that it doesn’t seem that you can order those wheels on North American Audi e-tron models. It’s also a bit silly that Audi continues to put “55” naming on the e-tron, despite it not having an internal combustion engine. We know that those numbers indicate power and not engine size but it still seems odd in an electric car that only has one powertrain option.
Also on this show car are the new Virtual Mirrors, exclusive to the Audi e-tron. Essentially, they’re little cameras that stick off of arms on the A-pillar, which display what they see onto little digital screens on the insides of the door panels. Not only are they high-tech but they look great, making the Audi e-tron look even more futuristic.
It’s a good looking SUV, this new Audi e-tron, with sportier looks than you might imagine an all-electric SUV to have. Its roof is aggressively raked, its rear wheel arches are aggressively flared and it sits lower than your traditional Ute. If you’re in the market for a sporty, upscale SUV, the Audi e-tron seems like the one to get, regardless of powertrain. The fact that it packs the most range of any equivalent electric car is just an added bonus. Oh, and those cool virtual “mirrors”.
