For North American customers that don’t know of SEAT, it’s Spain’s offshoot of the Volkswagen Group and makes cars that are share their chassis, engines and technologies with many VW and Audi cars. Many of SEAT’s vehicles are quite good and offer excellent value. One such car is the SEAT Cupra, a sporty little crossover based on the MQB chassis, just like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q3. The upcoming performance version, the SEAT Cupra Formenter FZ, might be offered with the same 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder as the Audi RS Q3.
This upcoming SEAT Cupra Formenter FZ is going to be based on the newest version of the MQB Evo architecture, the same one that underpins the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf. Because of that, it’s going to get all of the latest bells and whistles the VW Group has to offer. And because it’s going to be the top-end performance version, it’s likely going to get Audi’s dynamite turbo five-pot.
If that’s the case, the hot-shoe SEAT will make around 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, which is what the Audi RS Q3 makes. It might get the slightly more powerful 415 horsepower version that powers the upcoming RS3 but we suspect Audi might not let another brand’s car make the same power as the RS3.
What’s interesting is that the SEAT Cupra Formenter FZ is also likely to come in at a lower price than the RS Q3. So it could very well be the more budget-friendly alternative to the fast Audi. If we’re being honest, judging by some spy photos, the SEAT might actually be the better looking car as well. Considering that all the tech inside will almost be identical, there shouldn’t be too much of a downgrade in terms of cabin quality, either.
So if you’re in the market for a hot crossover and the Audi RS Q3 is slightly outside of your price range, the SEAT Cupra Formenter FZ might just fit the bill.
