The first generation Audi Q5 is one of the best-selling cars in the Ingolstadt-based brand’s storied history. The incredibly popular SUV has won over the hearts of most suburbanites the world over. However, the current generation model is getting quite stale and is in dire need of replacement. The next-gen Audi Q5 will be built on Audi’s new MLB platform and borrow the design language and much of the technology from the Audi Q7.
However, despite us knowing that it will employ much of the same design cues of the Q7, we still don’t really know what the Audi Q5 will look like. Auto Express has some exclusive images of what could possibly be the new Q5 completely without camouflage. However, we have no way of knowing how accurate these images are.
If they are accurate, though, the front end looks very good. It features the wide 3D grille of the Q7 and slim, angular headlights. The profile and rear end look a bit off, though, as the rear of the new Q5 seems to have a more aggressive and upright rear end, similar to the Porsche Macan, judging from the spy shots we’ve seen. In these images, it almost seems like a first-gen Audi Q7 out back. But it could just be the angle we’re seeing it from.
The new Audi Q5 is going to be a big deal for Audi, as it represents a large portion of the brand’s sales and we’ve seen just how successful the Audi Q7 has been and how it’s helped launch Audi into consecutive record sales months. So this new Q5 will anchor Audi’s SUV lineup and its design will be very important to its success, as the current model’s design is what’s keeping it so competitive in the segment.
The next-gen Audi Q5 will be significantly lighter than the outgoing model and will be powered by a suite of familiar engines. There will be a couple of gasoline engines and diesel engines in Europe, but the only engine likely to make it to the ‘States, at least at first, will be the 2.0 liter TFSI engine in the new Audi A4. Expect the new Audi Q5 to come out late next year as a 2018 model.
