The Audi R8 LMS race car is one of the most successful cars in Audi’s motorsport history, winning the 24 hours of Nurburgring in its debut just one year ago. This also marked the start of Audi Sport, Audi’s new motorsport division. To honor this, and the Audi R8 LMS’ 323 wins, Audi has created a new special edition variant of the Audi R8, dubbed “Selection 24h”, of which only 24 will be made.
The Audi R8 Selection 24h will get a new Suzuka Gray paint job with black and red accent highlights. Suzuka Gray is such an interesting paint color, as in most light it looks white, but as soon as the ambient lighting gets darker, the gray in it actually starts to come out and it’s really quite beautiful. The black and red highlights really make the car pop and give it an edgier, special look. The front spoiler, mirror housings, rear engine cover and rear diffuser will all be done in high-gloss carbon fiber, as well as the sideblades, which will also receive matte-finish “R8 24h” logos. The tailpipes will be finished in black as will the 20″ wheels.
The interior will be trimmed in Rotor Gray leather with Alcantara headlining and gloss CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) extended trim pieces. It will also get gloss CFRP illuminated door sills. A new addition to the R8 Selection 24h will be entry lights that shine the Audi R8 logo on the ground.
As far as mechanical upgrades, the Audi R8 Selection 24h will receive Dynamic Steering, Adaptive Damper Control with Audi’s Magnetic Ride technology and Audi’s laser headlights. However, aside from that, the R8 Selection 24h uses the same 5.2 liter 610 hp V10 as the Audi R8 V10 Plus. It will be mated to the same seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox and feature the same electronic differential and Quattro all-wheel drive.
The “selection 24h” special edition of the Audi R8 Coupé V10 plus is a homage to Audi’s remarkable achievements in endurance racing. In the Le Mans 24 Hours alone, the brand with the four rings has celebrated 13 overall wins in the past 15 years. The first five of these were clinched by the R8 sports prototype, which gave its name to the production sports model. The GT3 racing car Audi R8 LMS made its competition debut in 2009. It has since collected over 300 wins worldwide, including overall wins in
24-hour races on the Nürburgring, at Spa-Francorchamps and Zolder, and in Dubai. It also has a class victory in Daytona to its name. Last year, the new generation of the Audi R8 LMS made a dream debut and won its first 24-hour race on the Nürburgring at the very first attempt.
The Audi R8 “selection 24h” will be on view to the public for the first time at the AUDI AG presentation area in the paddock at the 24 Hours Nürburgring. Orders for the special model can be placed from May 10, 2016. It costs EUR 229,000 in Germany.
