New Audi V8 engine family will be the last

Audi recently launched an all-new V8 engine family, with the first of its kind debuting in the Audi SQ7 TDI. This new V8 engine family will consist of many diesel and gasoline variants and will also be used in Porsches and Bentleys moving forward. In fact, this new V8 architecture was developed in-joint by Audi and Porsche and is debuting a gasoline variant in the all-new Porsche Panamera.

However, despite this new family of V8s being used prominently throughout the VW Group, it will like be Audi’s last. According to Autocar, a source of theirs from inside Audi has told them that the four-ringed brand will no longer develop new V8s after this.

According to Autocar’s source, “By 2025, the plan of Audi management is to have between 25% and 35% of Audi’s output as battery-electric vehicles.” This only makes sense, as downsizing and electrifying is becoming more and more popular, as well as more necessary to comply with government regulations. And because of the newfound focus on electrified powertrains, it just doesn’t make sense to invest in new V8 engines. “It would be very difficult to justify the huge investment in another new V8 because of the cost of developing electric drivetrains and battery packs. You have to ask what is the best use of investment money.”

While this makes sense, it does make us sad. Audi has always made impressive V8s, from the wonderful 4.2 liter in the B7 S4 to the 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 in the Audi S8. V8 engines from the four-rings have always been special and this new one seems to fit the mold. The new V8 family of engines has impressed engineers inside the VW Group, with Porsche Panamera engineers calling it “really, really impressive”. If Porsche engineers praise anything, you know it’s good.

So we’ll be sad to see Audi ditch the V8 engine, but at least we know it’s had a good run. Plus, we still have many years of the current batch and eight-cylinder engines to hold onto for a little while longer. But even after the V8 passes, we can hang onto the fact that the Ingolstadt-based brand also makes fantastic V6 and I5 engines that probably won’t be going anywhere for a very long time.
