German tuning company, MTM, which stands for Motoren Technik Mayer, has just created a 722 hp monster out of an Audi RS6 Avant. This particular car is called the Nardo edition, because the Nardo race track is where MTM’s boss, Roland Mayer, took the 722 hp beast to reach speeds of 211 mph. You read that correctly, an Audi wagon just hit 211 mph on an 8 mile circular track. That’s faster than a Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 650S. In a wagon.
The secret to MTM’s 722 hp isn’t much of a secret. Bigger turbochargers were added, which combine to give a peak boost pressure of 33.4 psi. MTM also used a Cantronic ECU to remap the fuel, valve timing, ignition and boost boost curves. This gives the RS6 Avant 722 peak hp and 649 lb-ft of torque, up from the stock car’s 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of twist. Power is routed through an 8-Speed ZF automatic and sent to all four wheels via Quattro. It can not only hit a top speed of 211, but it can do the sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds and 155 mph in 18.7 seconds. This could be the maddest wagon on the planet.
The MTM RS6 Avant also gets some cosmetic tuning as well, with 21″ Bimoto-style wheels, which are lighter than the stock wheels, and bigger brakes. The brakes are supplied by Brembo and the rotors measure 16.14 inches and use 6-piston calipers. With all of that horsepower, the MTM RS6 needs to be able to stop well too.
But the most remarkable thing about the MTM RS6 Avant is the fact that it actually drives quite civilized on the road. The air suspension is perfectly capable of keeping the ride comfortable and smooth without feeling floaty or disconnected. The engine, despite its massive boost and insane power, is actually quite easy to putter around town. It’s actually a lot of fun, because you know that at any moment you so choose, you have 722 hp at the disposal of your right foot. And the 8-Speed auto slides through gears with buttery smoothness, so when either wafting about town or nailing your favorite road, you’re always in the right gear, riding an endless wave of torque as it accurately and intelligently swaps cogs.
The MTM Audi RS6 Avant could easily be the coolest wagon on the planet. It’s mind-bindingly fast, good looking, comfortable and easy to drive on a daily basis. Without some of the Nardo livery and the fancy body kit, there would be little to distinguish this car as anything other than the ordinary Audi A6 Avant. So you could make it the ultimate sleeper. You’d pull up beside some yabbo in a Porsche 911 and while he thinks he’s the fast car at the set of lights, he’d be dead wrong, and you’d blitz him while driving what seems to be a family wagon. Life doesn’t get much better than that.
