Volkswagen AG has just reported that Hankook will be the Original Equipment Manufacturer of tires for the upcoming 2016 Audi A4. Hankook was previously the OE tire company for the last-generation Audi TT and TTS, using the brand’s Ventus S1 Evo2 tires. These same tires will be used again on the upcoming Audi A4.
Audi will use three different sizes of the Ventus S1 Evo2, 225/50R17Y, 245/40R18Y and 245/35R19Y. These will vary based on wheel size, as different Audi trim levels will come with different sized wheels. The biggest wheels offered will clearly be 19″ inches.
Hankook claims that this tire was developed at its European Technology Centre in Germany and they’re manufactured at its Rácalmás, Hungary plant. The tire’s lightweight high-tensile steel cord was originally designed for the DTM German Touring Car Championship. The S1 Evo2 tires also provide low-rolling resistance and less noise than previous models.
According to Ho-Youl Pae, head of Hankook Tire Europe “All newly developed technologies of the new 2016 Audi A4 generation particularly focus on reducing drive resistances as well as the subsequent reduction of CO2 emissions,”. It’s curious that Hankook has become the OE equipment on the Audi A4, though. Toyo is the OE tire for Audi is several different markets, especially in Japan. So it’s odd that Audi would go in a different direction, as opposed to using a brand that Audi already has a good relationship with. Audi must really believe these tires are the best fitment for its upcoming A4. Hopefully they provide the necessary grip, refinement and comfort we’ve come to expect from Audi.Tire Business]
