The Audi R18 Le Mans racer is one of the coolest race cars in history and also one of the most successful. Unfortunately, Audi is leaving endurance racing and the R18 will be put out to pasture. So it’s good to take a close look at one of the coolest race cars in Le Mans history, both inside and out. So let’s check out this video from Top Gear that brings us closer to it.
It’s a short video, only 25 seconds long, but it gets us right up close to the R18 and we can a brief cockpit view. To be honest, any time we get to look at the R18, especially now that it’s being retired, we’re going to. Those lucky folks at Top Gear actually got to spend some time behind the wheel of the Audi R18 and talk about it in the latest issue of TG Magazine.
Apparently, from the cockpit, the Audi R18 is like a spaceship. Dozens of buttons and switches occupy the cabin of the R18, making it very intimidating at first. However, once everything is learned, the R18 can finally be experienced. And it certainly is an experience.
Powering the Audi R18’s rear wheels is a 4.0 liter V6 turbo-diesel engine that develops 520 hp and powering the front wheels is an electric motor that makes 480 hp. That power, combined with the fact that the Audi R18 only weighs about a ton, gives it a power-to-weight ratio of around 1,150 hp/per ton. That’s almost double that of the McLaren P1.
It’s impossible to give you an accurate interpretation of what the R18 is like to drive, since I haven’t driven it, so I’ll let the boys at Top Gear do it. However, I can say that, according to them, it’s so flipping fast it can cause paralysis. Check it out.
