Four-Door Coupe Audi A3 liftback to take on Mercedes-Benz CLA

Recent rumors of the four-door Audi TT have just been squashed by Audi, claiming that such a car was never actually in the works. Now, though, we’re hearing that we will be getting a small four-door coupe from Audi anyway, one to compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. An Audi A3 liftback, as recently reported by Autocar.

Actually, Audi plans on calling it the Audi A3 Sportback, similar to the A5 Sportback. Though, the brand already has an A3 Sportback and it’s currently a hatchback. So we’re curious as to how the nomenclature is going to pan out for the next-gen A3. Either way, it’s going to be a four-door coupe with a liftback tailgate, just like the A5 Sportback, and it’s apparently already been given the green-light by former Audi exec Rupert Stadler.

It’s said that this upcoming Audi A3 liftback (or Sportback) could even be a replacement for the Audi TT, a car whose sales have dwindled in recent years. That’s a smart move, as four-door coupes are all the rave these days and small roadsters are, well, not.

Audi A3 Sedan

There are few if any details to be had at the moment but Autocar’s sources seem to claim the new Audi A3 liftback to be 4400mm long, about 300 shorter than the current A5 Sportback. So it won’t be a tiny car.

It’s also said that it will get a 1.4 liter turbocharged petrol engine to start, or maybe even a 2.0 liter diesel, but either way all models will get a 48-volt electrical system and MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) powertrains. There will also be a sportier Audi S3 liftback, that will get a 300-plus hp 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This will compete with the Mercedes-AMG CLA35.

Thankfully, Audi is allegedly working on a fully-hot RS3 liftback, with the brand’s famous 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, making at least 400 hp. It will take on the Mercedes-AMG CLA45. Autocar also claims that Audi is calling that car the spiritual successor to the original Audi Sport Quattro, which was actually more of a three-door hatchback but I sort of get where Audi is going with that. It will have a liftback tailgate, a turbocharged five-pot and Quattro all-wheel drive. But so does the current RS3 Sportback. Though, it’s said that Audi is making this upcoming RS3 liftback have a similar looking to the UR Quattro, with big, flared wheel arches and air intakes at the front of the hood.

We also wonder if this car will replace the Audi A3 sedan here in America. We don’t get the Sportback model here and it doesn’t make much sense to sell two different four-door models of the same car. We actually hope that’s the case, as a four-door coupe is a lot sexier than just a standard sedan and allowing the entry-level Audi A3 to have that sort of look is very exciting.

Aside from that, we don’t know anything else. So stay tuned and we’ll bring you more as we get it.

I've been in love with cars since I was a kid, specifically German cars. Now I get to drive them talk about them on the internet.
