Drivers Republic compares R8 to 997 Turbo and M6

The Porsche 911 Turbo is a benchmark in many regards. It’s been a benchmark of performance with a turbocharged flat-six hanging on at the rear axle, defying physics, to the tremendous luxury that Porsche packs into the small frame of the 911. The newest generation 997 Turbo is no exception – nor is the BMW M6, looking every bit the part of a big GT with it’s 507HP V10.

However, Drivers Republic has pitted these two titans against the new kid on the block, the Audi R8 to see if it can stack up against established name plates.

DR managed to get their hands on these super cars for a whole 3 days to try out in a vast array of environments from a dead-straight runway to bumpy back roads to the historic Silverstone circuit.  While everyone has their own opinion of which car should reign supreme over its rivals whether it be for speed, comfort or power figures, DR took a different approach looking at R8, 911 and M6 over a variety of different situations to evaluate which was the best all-rounder – which car could you live with and still have a blast in?

Our vote would obviously go for the R8 as the best all-rounder, but this competition is pretty stiff. Against BMW, the R8 finds itself going head-to-head with the M6 in it’s newest Competition Package guise with revised suspension work, and the 507 V10 to Audi’s 4.2L V8 producing 420HP. Then there’s the Porsche 911 Turbo – the benchmark of this segment. A car that has a reputation of being both reliable, luxurious and blindingly quick – and ironically, now a relative of the R8 once Porsche acquired a majority stake in VW Auto Group and its subsidiaries.

While these cars, aren’t necessarily indentical in what they try to accomplish, they’re all well-respected and highly sought after cars. Which one takes the checkered flag after all is said and done?
