At this point, we know what the Audi Q4 e-tron is and isn’t — it’s a compact, good looking, premium electric crossover designed to pull Q5 customers over to electrification. It isn’t an exciting, engaging, sporty crossover. That’s just not what it’s supposed to be. However, there is a version that’s decently quick — the Audi Q4 e-tron 50. Does that do enough to make it more appealing to enthusiasts? Top Gear recently drove it to find out.
The Q4 e-tron 50 is the dual-motor version that makes 295 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Neither of those figures are particularly impressive but they’re enough to make the Q4 e-tron 50 feel like a brisk hatchback, getting to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds. Is that enough, though?
Honestly, probably not. Sure, it’s quicker and it feels a bit more lively than the single-motor car but it’s never really fun or engaging. What’s interesting is that it’s surprisingly capable, with an apparent tidiness that does make it pleasant. However, it lacks the fizz of a properly sporty machine.
There is hope, though. Its capable chassis, steering, and handling do prove that there’s potential for a sportier version later down the line. Perhaps an Audi SQ4 e-tron or even an RS Q4 e-tron? We can only hope, as that would really get enthusiasts interested in going electric.
Until then, though, the Audi Q4 e-tron remains what it is, despite its more powerful dual-motor setup — a comfy, stylish crossover that will help convert Audi Q5 customers into e-tron customers. If it can do that successfully enough, Audi will have the funds to make more interesting and exciting EVs. Cars like the Audi e-tron GT won’t continue to happen if cars like the Audi Q4 e-tron don’t sell well. So while it’s not the sexiest car Audi sells, it’s likely to be popular among regular Audi customers and we should all be rooting for its success.
