Did Audi Just Buy McLaren? McLaren Says No — UPDATED

Update: According to a recent report from Reuters, Audi semi-denied the acquisition of McLaren. “As part of our strategic considerations, we are constantly looking at various cooperation ideas,” a spokesperson told Reuters. That’s not an outright denial, so we’ll keep our ears to the ground for more info.

Like many of you, I woke up to breaking news this morning, as a report from Autocar claimed that Audi had bought McLaren; both its road car and motorsport divisions. The news shocked social media, as car enthusiasts were both happy and horrified at the idea of McLaren being under the VW Group umbrella. Since the story broke, Autocar has updated its article, as McLaren has denied the story.

In a follow-up statement, McLaren’s press team said “McLaren Group is aware of a news media report stating it has been sold to Audi. This is wholly inaccurate and McLaren is seeking to have the story removed.”

I also reached out to Audi USA for clarification, due to the conflicting information, and was told by an Audi representative that they did not have any info on the matter thus far.

At the moment, it would seem that Autocar’s story was based on some incorrect information. There had been rumors swirling for the last couple of weeks, claiming that Audi was interested in buying McLaren for both its supercar technology and its Formula One team. However, there was nothing concrete, only rumor, and McLaren denied those rumors a week ago.

It’s possible that Autocar’s story was just premature, that a deal is currently in the works between the two brands but just isn’t finalized yet. However, at the moment we’d say it’s doubtful that Audi did, in fact, buy McLaren.

What’s more likely is that one of Autocar’s sources, whether at McLaren or Audi, incorrectly told Autocar a deal was done, . So they ran with the story. Which is actually what leads us to believe that there may still be a deal on the table, just not finalized yet, because why else would someone tell Autocar a deal was done?

We’ll keep you posted about this potential McLaren/Audi deal as we get more information.
