Audi just launched its latest iteration of the A4 in North America and it’s something the Ingolstadt-based brand is incredibly proud of. The new Audi A4 is indeed something to be proud of, as it’s much more powerful, lighter and more intelligent than ever before and leads its segment in many more ways than one, a fact that Audi seems to want to rub in its competitors faces. However, Audi’s excitement may be short lived, as another competitor is coming to crash the midsize executive sedan segment — the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
The Giulia sedan will be the car that spearheads Alfa’s return to the American market and Alfa realizes how important that is. So the Turin-based firm is throwing everything it’s got at the Giulia in hopes that it can compete with the best in the segment.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the Giulia’s high-performance variant, is well covered already and will compete with the Audi RS4 when it debuts. However, the standard Giulia, which will compete with the Audi A4, hasn’t yet had its time in the spotlight but will at the upcoming New York Auto Show next week. The Giulia will come in two other trim levels, aside from the Quadrifoglio, which will be the Giulia and Giulia Ti. Both will come with a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 276 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, making the Giulia more powerful than the Audi A4, which has 252 hp from its 2.0 liter four-pot.
The Giulia’s engine will send power to either the rear or all four wheels, via Alfa’s Q4 all-wheel drive system, through a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. Alfa claims that the Giulia will do 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds, which is just a tick faster than the Audi A4’s 5.6 second claimed time. However, just the performance specs don’t tell the whole story, the Giulia is packed full of tech and standard features.
All Alfa Romeo Giulias come with an impressive list of standard kit, including leather seats, a cleverly named Alfa-tainment system with either a 6.5 inch or optional 8.8 inch screen and a class-exclusive carbon fiber driveshaft. The latter is incredibly impressive, being that there are supercars that don’t have carbon fiber driveshafts.
Add that impressive tech and performance to fantastic looks and a stylish interior and you have package that will severely threaten every car in the segment. The brand-new Audi A4 is an incredibly good all-around car, but it’s been said to lack a bit emotion and fun. Emotion and fun are two things that the Giulia has in spades and Alfa Romeo is a brand known for being more soulful than any other.
This Alfa Romeo Giulia could be a big Italian monkey wrench in the German-dominated segment. While the Audi A4 is an excellent and intelligent car, one that the brain would pick in a second, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is a seductive and emotional car that the heart will pull for. The Giulia could seriously crash Audi’s current party for the new A4.
