This new generation of Audi A6 has drawn some mixed reviews. Some journalists feel that it’s too disconnected from the road, too artificial feeling to be exciting. Others recognize that it’s really not meant to be a proper sport sedan but a comfortable, quiet luxury sedan that, should it ever be called upon to do so, can handle a twisty back road with ease. In this new review from Car and Driver, it seems as if they’re in the latter camp.
Admittedly, C&D isn’t sure it’s as high on this new A6 as they were with the last one. Mostly because the previous-gen Audi A6 was on their 10 Best list several times and was an Editor’s Choice Pick every year it was on sale. So it’s safe to say that this new car has very large shoes to fill with the C&D team. Still, it impressed.
Its new interior drew praise for its design, comfort and materials, though some C&D staffers were less than enthused about its new touchscreen MMI system. We have a feeling a lot of customers are going to feel the same way.
One complaint was that its new engine is a bit laggier and less engaging than the previous one. This new engine is a 3.0 liter turbocharged unit that makes 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, compared to the old 3.0 liter supercharged V6 which made 333 hp and 325 lb-ft. That extra power and torque makes the new car faster but also a bit less responsive.
Having said that, C&D was very impressed with its ride and handling; as it offered sharp steering, a composed but comfortable ride and surprising agility. While the Audi A6 is no sport sedan, it has more impressive moves that most other cars in the segment.
While the new Audi A6 might not be the most thrilling car in the segment, nor the most capable, it’s hard to fault how well rounded it is. Sure, it’s a bit staid to look at but it’s handsome. Its new interior tech could be more intuitive but the rest of the cabin is fantastic. And while its engine is laggier than before, the rest of its performance; both in a straight line and through corners; is very impressive. Overall, the Audi A6 is a very impressive new luxury sedan and one that will likely do very well for Audi.
