Can the Audi e-tron Sportback Take Down the BMW iX?

The Audi e-tron is a bit of an old dog at this point, having debuted in 2018. While the Sportback model is a bit newer, and both cars were updated with a slightly longer range, they’re still a bit too old to take on some of their newer competition. In this new comparison test from Auto Express, we get to see that, as the Audi e-tron Sportback takes on the new BMW iX.


While the Audi e-tron Sportback is a fine car, this comparison truly shows its age and limitations. The all-new BMW iX is built on a bespoke EV chassis made from a mix of carbon fiber and aluminum, designed specifically for the iX and only the iX. The e-tron Sportback is built on a modified Q7 chassis, which isn’t great for EV use, as those modifications create weight and intrude on interior space. The iX feels like an EV that’s been built from the ground up to be an EV because it was.

The BMW iX’s weight advantage makes a massive difference in how they drive but, more importantly, their range. The iX doesn’t have a much larger battery pack — 111 kWh versus the Audi’s 95 kWh — and yet it has about 100 more miles of range. Weight and electric motor efficiency are the two biggest reasons why.


While the BMW iX has more range, it does lack power, though. Both cars use dual electric motors but the iX makes 322 horsepower and the e-tron makes 402 horsepower. The Audi’s added power actually makes it a touch quicker, despite being heavier, doing the 0-62 mph sprint in 5.7 seconds, versus the BMW iX’s 6.1 seconds.

Despite being the faster car, the Audi e-tron Sportback is actually less exciting to drive than the BMW iX eDrive40 used in this test. The Bimmer is also more comfortable, despite being more fun. Additionally, its interior is more visually interesting, roomier, and more high-tech. I haven’t driven the BMW iX just yet but I’ve sat inside it and its interior is far better than the e-tron’s.


I like the Audi e-tron. In isolation, it’s a great SUV to drive. However, it was a bit behind the times when it debuted. Now, it’s really fallen behind and is in dire need of replacement. Thankfully, an update is coming that should improve it quite a bit, before it’s replaced entirely by the upcoming Audi Q8 e-tron. And that can’t come soon enough.
