There are many comparison tests between the Audi A4 and many of its premium rivals swirling around the interwebs. Most of the cars it compares to are as German as it is, such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Sometimes it takes on the Jaguar XE, Cadillac ATS or Lexus IS. But what car have we never seen the A4 compared to yet? The Acura TLX. Thankfully Business Insider filled that void by putting both cars together recently.
The Audi A4 in question was a 2.0T Prestige model, which was optioned to almost $55,000. That’s no small chunk of change but, then again, the A4 does come with a ton of kit. It gets a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, which is mated to a brilliant seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive. It also gets Audi’s MMI system with the astonishing Virtual Cockpit, Apple CarPlay and Android Audi, a 4G LTE connection and a top-view camera system. So it’s seriously well-equipped but it also should be for that sort of money.
On the other hand, the Acura TLX is an absolute bargain by comparison. The S-Spec trim is the sportier trim of the TLX but not so sporty that it should be compared to the S4. It’s still very much an A4 competitor. Even still, it’s significantly cheaper, with BI’s as-tested price of $45,750 being $10k less than the A4’s. For that less money, you get a 3.5 liter naturally-aspirated V6 engine that makes 290 hp and a nine-speed automatic. You also get Acura’s not-so-cleverly-named Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.
According to Business Insider, the Audi A4 is the better car and it wins their test. Though, the TLX is a very good car and, in A-Spec, is actually the slightly more fun car to drive of the two. But the Audi A4’s cabin, technology, luxury and materials feel superior to the TLX’s while also being damn good to drive. So while it isn’t as thrilling as the TLX, it’s not boring and it’s so much better in every other regard. So the Audi A4 wins. And we don’t blame them for that conclusion.
