In light of the Top Gear gang moving on from the BBC to go work with Amazon Prime, I thought it would be good to take a look at some of our favorite Top Gear Audi moments.
Being one of the more recognizable car brands on the planet, and part of the German Big Three, Audi was featured quite a bit on Top Gear. Some of the Audi episodes weren’t so positive toward the brand, like the episode where the Audi RS5 loses quite handily to the BMW M3 Coupe, but there were some very favorable Audi episodes. So let’s take a look at some of the best.
Audi R8 vs Corvette ZR1: This episode was always one of m favorites, because it pits one of the best European sports cars up against one of the best American sports cars. The two cars are so vastly different, yet they both succeed in putting a smile on your face. In the episode, it’s clear that the R8 is the better car. It’s faster, handles better, looks far better and sounds better. Clarkson does go on to say that it’s a bit cold in personality, in comparison to the psychopathic Corvette ZR1, but that it is the superior car. Plus it’s just plain old fun watching Clarkson slide the R8 around the famous Top Gear Test Track.
Audi RS6 vs French Skiers: These tests were always fun, pitting a car against something so clearly not a car. In this test, Richard Hammond tests the, at the time, brand new Audi RS6 Avant against a couple of French Skiers. They start at the top of a mountain, but Hammond must take tight twisty roads, obviously, while the two skiers ski down the side of the mountain. It’s incredible how fast the two skiers can go, but it’s also incredible how well the RS6 handles the tight, twisty and snowy roads. With its 5.0 liter twin-turbo V10 and Quattro all-wheel drive, the RS6 rips and tears through the snowy mountainous roads like it’s what it was born to do. Such a cool car, such a cool race. Classic Top Gear fun.
Audi R8 Spyder vs Ferrari 458 Spider vs McLaren 12c Spider: This was one of the more fun episodes of recent Top Gear. The three hosts head to Spain, during the times of an economic crisis, with three “budget supercars”. And because it’s Spain, and the weather is lovely, they opted for convertibles. So they set off in their budget supercar convertibles, completing a series of various different kinds of challenges. They tour abandoned cities, race on an abandoned airport runway and even create their own circuit race track out of an abandoned city. Through all of these tests, it’s surprising how well the R8 Spyder does, considering it’s the cheapest by far. It’s actually becomes probably the best choice of cars by the end of the episode. But this episode has everything you could want, gorgeous supercars, beautiful scenery and silly shenanigans from the three hosts.
