Is the B9 Audi A4 the best Audi ever?

For 2017 (in the US, 2016 for EU), the Audi A4 has taken on a new form, as it’s now in its B9 generation. This new B9 Audi A4 is longer, wider, lower and lighter than the model it replaces and, in our opinion, far better as well. However, is it the best Audi ever made? That’s a bold statement, but one Business Insider made recently.

We’d have to disagree, of course, as the original Audi Quattro is obviously the best Audi ever made. However, we can understand where BI is coming from, as this is the most impressive Audi A4 ever made and is such a complete everyday car for a great price. As far as bargains go, this could be the best Audi ever.

Packing a 2.0 liter turbocharged TFSI four-cylinder engine, the Audi A4 makes 252 hp and a hefty 273 lb-ft of torque. That power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic gearbox, replacing the previous car’s eight-speed traditional torque-converter automatic. Thanks to its surprising power, rapid-shifting dual-clutch gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive grip, the A4 is capable of 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, making it near or at the top of its class.

But it isn’t just performance and speed that makes the new Audi A4 great. The interior is superb, with rich materials, top-of-the-class build quality and technology that would impress in a six-figure luxury car. It’s also incredibly quiet on the inside, by far the quietest in its class, and the ride is a fantastic mixture of compliance and firmness. It excels at being both supple and planted at the same time. This makes it a better cruiser than its rivals from BMW or Jaguar but also more fun than those from Mercedes-Benz or Lexus. It meets them somewhere in the middle with a wonderful compromise.

2016 Audi A4

At a starting price of just $34,900, the A4 undercuts almost all of its competitors. However, we don’t recommend getting that model. The base model comes in “Ultra” trim, meaning it has less power and gets better mpg, and only with front-wheel drive. If you want front-wheel drive buy a Volkswagen. Audis are meant to have Quattro, that’s the whole point. So bump up to the A4 Premium with Quattro all-wheel drive, which starts at $39,400. However, it’s worth every extra penny.

So the Audi A4 is probably the best overall car — considering price, economy, practicality, comfort and performance — that currently comes from Ingolstadt. But best Audi ever? We can’t subscribe to that idea. But we get the reasoning behind such an idea.
