Crossovers are king at the moment. Despite their sloppy handling, dull looks, and uninspired drive, crossovers are what sell, unfortunately. It’s upsetting to car enthusiasts because we see great cars die off due to poor sales, while similarly priced boring crossovers live on. However, there are still some great used cars to be had for what you can buy a new crossover for and many of those used cars are great family cars, too. For instance, in the UK, you can get a B7 Audi RS4 Avant for the same price, or less, than a brand-new Nissan Qashqai.
Top Gear recently put together a list of the best cars you can get for the same price as the Nissan Qashqai and the B7 Audi RS4 Avant was one of them. The Qashqai, for any ‘Mericans reading, is essentially a version of our Nissan Murano, one of the least interesting vehicles one could possibly drive. In the UK, the Nissan Qashqai starts at £25,000 and, for that same money, you can get far more exciting cars, like the B7 RS4 Avant.
Sure, the B7 Audi RS4 Avant will cost quite a bit more than the Qashqai in repairs but it will fill your soul with excitement. Its 4.2 liter naturally-aspirated V8 made 420 horsepower when new and revs past 8,200 rpm, making it one of the most delicious engines ever made. We’ll gloss over the fact that the V8 eats its timing chain tensioners every 80,000 miles and they cost about $2,000 to replace. Forget that, though, the B7 RS4 is an absolute gem to drive.
That brilliant V8 is paired with a six-speed manual transmission and drives all four wheels. That gives it all-weather grip and performance with proper driver engagement. I’ve never driven a B7 RS4 before, as they’re quite hard to come by in the ‘States, but I hear it’s excellent, almost Porsche-like.
The best part is that if you get the Avant version, it’s a practical family wagon. It has a back seat big enough for car seats and its trunk can fit a stroller, a dog, or anything else you might need. If it were our money, there isn’t a chance we bought a Qashqai or even an Audi Q3 for that money. Give us the B7 Audi RS4 Avant.
