Automobile Mag’s Audi S8 Plus review

Now that the new 2019 Audi A8 is on its way, it has some pretty big shoes to fill. While getting quite old now, the last-generation Audi A8 was a very good car and the top of the line performance variant — the Audi S8 Plus — is an astonishing car. That very S8 Plus was recently reviewed by Automobile Magazine, proving how great it still is, despite being on its way out.

Even though the Audi S8 Plus isn’t exactly a spring chicken, it still packs enough power to keep up with the young bucks. Under the hood lies a 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that makes a whopping 605 hp and 517 lb-ft. That’s enough to rocket the S8 Plus from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.7 seconds. It’s probably quicker than that in the real world, now. In fact, Automobile’s Arthur St. Antoine feels that it’s right up there with some of the fastest cars on the market right now. The super sedan to beat, currently, is the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, which packs 600 hp and hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. So the S8 Plus can certainly hang.

But it isn’t just brutal, straight-line power that makes the Audi S8 Plus so great. It also handles well. St. Antoine claims the steering feel to be great. While we wouldn’t say it’s great, as it can be a bit light and somewhat vague, it’s perfectly suited to the massive luxury car that is the S8 Plus. And it’s impressively agile, as well, being able to genuinely be hustled around some twisty roads, despite being a two and a half ton luxury sedan.

When you want to calm down, though, and enjoy the wonderful luxury of the S8 Plus’ cabin, it can do that too. The interior is wonderfully luxury, well designed and made with superb build quality. Admittedly, the design is getting a bit old now, as the new Audi A8 is far prettier and packed with better tech. It’s still a very nice place to be, though, and can actually be a bit refreshing, due to it being a bit old-school in its tech. I say old-school but it still has sat-nav, Audi’s MMI, active cruise control and a Bang & Olufsen surround sound system.

So even though you might be excited to see the upcoming Audi S8, based on the next-gen Audi A8, the current Audi S8 Plus is still capable of hanging with the newer, more modern super sedans.
