When we first saw the 2019 Audi A1, we were incredibly impressed with its looks, interior and cabin technology. For its segment, it seems almost impossible to beat in regard to those aforementioned attributes. That’s all well and good on paper and in photos but how does the new A1 do in practice, on the road? Auto Express recently found out.
The Audi A1 seems to have delivered where we expected it to and in some unexpected ways as well. We know it was going to have class-leading technology and style. So it’s no surprise that Auto Express praised it in those regards. Its as-standard Digital Cockpit (a toned-down version of its optional Virtual Cockpit) provides it with digital dials and its 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system are both class-leading. Also, its interior is stylish and modern looking.
Though, we knew it would do well inside. Where it’s surprisingly good is on the road. Its steering and handling dynamics are said to be sharp and fun. While it’s not as fun as the Ford Fiesta or even a MINI Cooper, it’s more luxurious and high-tech than the former and cheaper than the latter.
It must be said that while its interior is very nice looking and filled with tech, it’s filled with some materials that aren’t in keeping with its price. For instance, you can find similar materials and plastics inside of a much cheaper Volkswagen Polo. I guess that’s the downside of being part of the VW Group; you can make an impressive car cheap but only by using some of the larger, cheaper brand’s parts.
Still, Auto Express seems to think that the Audi A1 is a very good little car and we’d have to agree. While it isn’t perfect, it offers better tech, refinement and style than anything even close to its price point can.
