The standard Audi S8 was powerful enough as it was, with its 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged TFSI V8 making 513 hp. The standard S8 is capable of getting from 0-60 mph in an astonishing 4.1 seconds, which is blistering considering the S8’s size and weight. But after all of this power and performance, Audi wasn’t done. So it created the S8 Plus and it cranks the S8 up to eleven.
The Audi S8 Plus makes a whopping 597 hp and an incredible 553 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough torque to tug a cruise ship. All of that power also means that the Audi S8 is capable of getting from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, which is faster than an Audi S4. With the optional Dynamic Package, the S8 Plus will continue on to a limited top speed of 189 mph.
Well, Auto Express was able to drive the monster that is the S8 Plus and has come away impressed. Like the standard A8 it’s based on, the S8 Plus is smooth and comfortable in Comfort mode, but once put in Dynamic mode, it sharpens up and becomes a much better handling car than its size would suggest. It’s sharp and agile, especially so for such a big luxury sedan. The steering is tight and accurate, as well, which makes it even easier to toss the big luxo-barge around. But we knew this much already, as the standard S8 is quite the dynamic handler as well, so obviously the S8 Plus will handle just as well, if not better. And on top of being fast, powerful and a good handler, the S8 is also quite economical. Relatively, of course. 28 mpg on the EU Cycle is pretty damn good for a car with damn near 600 hp.
So, basically, the S8 Plus is exactly as we thought it would be; a faster, better handling and better looking version of the already excellent Audi S8. It might not be worth the extra price bump over the standard S8, but it’s still an exciting luxury car that can outpace some supercars. Most A8s sold in the UK are diesels, so the S8 Plus will most likely have a very small market. However, for the few folks that do buy one, they’ll have the meanest sedan on the market.
