Audi to turn your car into rolling drive-in movie theater at 2019 CES

At the moment, car interiors are the most distracting they’ve ever been. Remember the days when you just sat in the driver’s seat and the only things to look at were the gauges and what lied ahead of your windshield? No more. Gone are those days, replaced by modern days that bring more screens to the interior of cars than the Architect’s room at the end of The Matrix Reloaded. Turns out, though, that it’s not yet enough, as Audi plans to put on a clinic at the 2019 CES.

CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is always filled with crazy, futuristic tech and ideas. This one from Audi seems to turn you car into a rolling drive-in movie theater.

Basically, the idea is to create a new kind of in-car entertainment for when cars become more autonomous. Audi is one of the world leaders in automotive autonomy, with the Audi A8 being the first production car in history to achieve Level 3 autonomous driving. So it’s only fitting that Audi is one of the first brands to offer a new form of enjoying that autonomy.

So when you’re driving along, or I should say riding along, with the car driving itself, you will have what Audi calls “free time” to just hang out and relax while the car does its thing. So to keep you from being bored (may the Car Gods forbid it), Audi wants to turn the car interior into an “amusement park”. Okay, then.

Also, when the car is stationary, you will have the “Audi Immersive In-Car Entertainment”. That will supposedly turn the car into a sort of drive-in movie theater, allowing you to stream content and watch movies or television from the inside of the car. This would be interesting if it could operate during autonomous driving up to a certain low speed, so that you can pass the time in heavy traffic with a movie or TV show.

All of this tech is interesting and it’s designed to make life nicer and easier. But doesn’t anyone miss when cars were just cars?

I've been in love with cars since I was a kid, specifically German cars. Now I get to drive them talk about them on the internet.
