The 2018 Paris Motor Show is only days away and there are going to be some very interesting debuts from several automakers. Audi is among them, with a couple debuts of its own. One of which will be some sort of new Audi R8, possibly a racing variant, while the other will be this — the Audi SQ2.
Obviously, the Audi SQ2 will be based on the standard Q2, only with more power, more performance and more anger. The most potent variant of the current Audi Q2 packs less than 200 hp. This new SQ2 will use a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, packing 296 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, which is about the same as an Audi S3. It’s virtually the same engine but we’re assuming Audi keeps it a bit less powerful than the S3, and likely the upcoming SQ3 as well, so as to not overshadow its more expensive sibling.
That engine will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and send power to all four wheels. With all of that gear, Audi claims the SQ2 will be able to reach 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is quite quick, actually.
It also looks much sportier than the standard Q2, which is actually impressive considering the fact that the Q2 is already quite sporty looking. The new Audi SQ2 gets a black Singleframe grille, black front air intakes, black mirrors and a new black side skirt. It also sits on lower suspension and larger, sportier wheels. So it will have the look as well as the punch.
We’re excited about the SQ2, even if it won’t be coming to North America. It looks like it could be one of the more fun little Audi crossovers on the market, it will likely be relatively fuel efficient and will cost less than the equivalent Audi S3 or SQ3. So it should be a popular little car in Europe.
