In a heart-stopping final race in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday July 15, one which came down to the final lap, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team won the Formula E Championship.
Audi was in good position to win the teams classification heading into the race, with a heroic one-two finish the day before by Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt. Yet, going into the weekend, the Audi Sport team was down by a 33-point deficit. That deficit became a 2-point advantage by the end of the weekend, giving Audi Sport the teams classification win for this Formula E season.
On Sunday, Audi Sport’s Lucas di Grassi himself came in second place, just one day after coming in first place which helped put him second in the driver’s classification for the season. And all of that came after not finishing in the points in the first four races.
“No points in four of the races and now I’m second in the drivers’ classification – this is a small miracle. It still turned out to be an exceptional season for me and also our team. We never give up and winning the teams’ title after such an incredible comeback is the best proof of this,” said di Grassi.
di Grassi’s teammate, Daniel Abt, also had a great day, placing third and scoring 15 points, with an additional point added for having the fastest lap of the day. That gives Abt four fastest laps of the season and the most of any driver. “We had a big goal and we achieved it. What a comeback – I’m happy and delighted for the entire team. And this includes people not at the track, but also every partner and employee in Ingolstadt, Neuburg and Kempten,” said Abt.
We congratulate the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team on the teams victory and both di Grassi and Abt on their incredible seasons. It shows how far the team has come and how exciting the sport is getting.
