Audi, who didn’t put out a commercial during last year’s Super Bowl, is returning to the first quarter of this year’s big game with a new TV spot featuring an Audi R8 V10 Plus and David Bowie, who recently passed at the age of 69.
The ad features a retired astronaut who’d apparently lost his zeal, sitting quietly while staring out of the window. He won’t respond to anyone and refuses to eat. He’s missing his glory days. However, a family member, presumably his son, notices this and decides to show him something, so he leads the astronaut out outside of the front door. Outside, a gorgeous Audi R8 V10 Plus, the closest four-wheeled vehicle to a spaceship, awaits them both. The young man hands the old man the key and as the old, retires astronaut takes his steps towards the car he gets flashbacks of walking down the ramp of the launching pad to enter the rocket he once flew to space. As he gets settled into the car, he’s envisioning flipping on all necessary switches for his old rocket. He then thumbs the starter button and it’s lift off.
We then see the retired astronaut bombing down back country roads with the R8 V10 as if he were rocketing to outer space, all while “Starman” by David Bowie plays in the background. It’s a great commercial, one filled with a retired man’s reminiscence of a better time and the kick-ass Audi R8 that helps him do it. It’s one of the best Super Bowl ads we’ve seen thus far and a great one for Audi to get back into it.
