When Audi released its new S4 and S5 for Europe, fans were up in arms about the four-ringed brand replacing their turbocharged V6 petrol enore excigines for diesel ones. The reason for the uproar is the fact that diesel engines, even powerful ones, aren’t particularly sporty and the S4 and S5 are sports cars. So it’s a bit disappointing to see them powered by efficient diesel engines. However, ABT Sportsline has a bit of a remedy and their Audi S5 Sportback TDI looks ace.
With nothing more than a simple ECU tune, ABT Sportsline has upped the Audi S5 Sportback TDI’s power output to 384 hp, up from 347 hp and a whopping 531 lb-ft of torque (up from 516 lb-ft). ABT hasn’t given any official performance metrics for the S5 Sportback after the tune but it claims that it’s quicker than the stock car’s 4.9 second 0-62 mph time.
Don’t just think that ABT added some horses and walked away, though. The Audi S5 Sportback TDI seen here has been fitted with height-adjustable coilover suspension that can lower the car anywhere from 15-40 mm at the front and rear. That, combined with new anti-roll bars and the added power, and the ABT-tuned Audi S5 Sportback TDI should be much more fun that the stock car.
Visually, this specific car has been given a black-on-black-on-black-on-black color scheme. Everything is black; from the paint to the wheels to the trim. It’s all black. But it looks good. It’s very sporty and aggressive, thanks to its lowered suspension and 20-inch wheels.
We don’t love the fact that the new Audi S5 is a diesel anymore than most fans. However, with some added power, better handling suspension and some cooler looks, the new S5 Sportback can be an excellent everyday driver that’s cool, fun and even fuel efficient. We still wish it had a proper engine under its hood but at least ABT can help.
