While convertibles aren’t too popular among many enthusiasts, they do offer some of the most fun you can have in a sports car. That’s because they offer more noise and more atmosphere than their closed-top siblings. In this new comparison test from Auto Express, we take a look at two of the best sports car convertibles — the Audi S5 Convertible and Ford Mustang GT Convertible.
Here in America, it’s hard to find a sports car that’s more popular than the Ford Mustang. It looks great, comes with a stonking V8 and it’s cheap. In fact, it’s so cheap in America that it’s can be had for almost half of something like an Audi S5 Cabriolet. In Europe, though, the Mustang isn’t as cheap, closing the gap between it and some of its more premium competitors.
So with a closer price gap, can the drop-top Mustang compete with one of its more posh European rivals? According to Auto Express, no, the Audi S5 Cabriolet is still the better car. However, it’s a closer contest than you might think.
The Mustang is the more fun car. Its 5.0 liter naturally-aspirated V8 is a hooligan and makes a fantastic noise, along with 444 hp (in Europe, 460 hp in America). It’s also the better handling car and the better sports car. It also sports sexy retro looks. However, its interior feels cheap, despite looking cool, its technology is lacking and its roof mechanism is quite a bit worse. It also has a much worse automatic gearbox than the Audi’s.
As for the car from Ingolstadt, the Audi S5 Cabriolet is the winner for being the better overall better car. It’s just as fast despite having less power, as its 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 only makes 354 hp, and its Quattro all-wheel drive grip makes it more capable. It’s also more luxurious, sports much better technology, an easier roof to operate and even better fuel economy.
The Ford Mustang GT ‘Vert is an awesome car, of that there’s no doubt. It’s a great sports car and a great one to drive but it’s just not as cohesive a package as the Audi S5 Cabriolet.
