VIDEO: Audi S3 vs Golf R — Quarter-Mile Drag Race

This new Audi S3 Sportback is a good car, despite its lack of thrilling driving dynamics. It’s still quick, capable, practical, good looking, and high-tech. Did I mention it’s quick? Sure, it’s not light-you-hair-on-fire quick but it’s certainly quick enough to be fun. However, is it quick enough to take on its rivals?

In this new drag race video from Carwow, we get to see just how quick it is, as it takes on the BMW M135i, Mercedes-AMG A35, and its VW Group sibling, the Volkswagen Golf R. So which is fastest in a quarter-mile drag race?

All of them are extremely similar on paper. They all use 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines, all have automatic gearboxes, and all use Haldex-based all-wheel drive systems. Their power levels differ slightly, but not too much. The Golf R makes 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the BMW makes 306 horsepower and 332 lb-ft, versus the Mercedes-AMG A35’s 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. Lastly, the Audi S3 makes 310 horsepower and 295 lb-ft.

In the standing quarter-mile race, the VW Golf R absolutely demolished the competition. The Audi S3 performed well, coming in second place, but nothing could even sort of keep up with the Golf R. In fact, it ran a 12.3 second quarter-mile time. That might not seem blistering fast by today’s standards but the Golf R is a four-cylinder hatchback, running close to a 12-second quarter-mile time. Lunacy.

What isn’t surprising is that the S3 came in a close second. Both cars are so similar under the skin that it should come as no surprise that the Golf R was quicker.
