This new generation of Audi S3 is a surprisingly good one. We sent our own Chuck Vossler out to Colorado to test it with Audi and he came back incredibly impressed with its on-road dynamics, performance, and interior quality. However, for the same money, you can get a more BMW M240i. And for less money, you can get the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R, which comes with the same engine and a more clever rear diff. So which one is best?
In this new video from Throttle House, we get to see the three aforementioned cars go head-to-head-to-head in a drag race. Of course, drag racing isn’t only metric by which we should judge cars. However, it does put their performance values into perspective.
Let’s check the specs. The Audi S3 uses a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to make 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. While the Volkswagen Golf R uses the same engine to make 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, the BMW M240i gets a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. All three cars are all-wheel drive.
There were two drag races in this video; a standing drag race and a rolling one. In the standing drag race, the BMW M240i crushed the other two VW Group products and it wasn’t even close. It jumped both cars at the line and kept pulling on them throughout the entire race. Though, that’s to be expected, considering the Bimmer’s massive power advantage.
However, the rolling race was actually much closer, which lead the TH duo to suspect BMW using some overboost trickery to get faster launches. It was still faster, though. What’s more interesting, though, was how the Audi S3 took on the Golf R. Both cars use the same engine but the VW is lighter and more powerful, while also being cheaper. So which car is better. Check the video to find out.
