Audi is no stranger to silver-screen product placement. Back in 2004, Will Smith’s I Robot featured a fully electric Audi supercar that had design cues which would eventually land on the Audi R8. The Audi R8 would then feature in 2008’s Iron Man, as the titular character’s own car. From there, Audi has also had many features in modern Marvel movies, such as the Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. Now, Audi has designed the first ever concept car for an animated film — the Audi RSQ e-tron.
In the upcoming animated movie “Spies in Disguise”, again featuring Will Smith, Audi has designed a fully-electric, fully-autonomous supercar for the world’s greatest super spy — Lance Sterling, voiced by Smith. While he’s be the second-best animated spy named Sterling (the first being Sterling Archer, of course), he’s the only one to have a fully-electric Audi supercar.
The Audi RSQ e-tron has been designed by Audi Design in cooperation with Blue Sky Studios. “Audi takes a digital, forward-looking approach to the design process, both in developing fictional content and in the production modeling studio,” said Frank Rimili, head of Exterior Design for Concept Vehicles at Audi AG. “At Audi Design, we combine state-of-the-art digital visualization techniques with handmade precision. These processes enable us to implement futuristic design ideas with the same precision in the development of a fictional virtual concept vehicle such as the RSQ e-tron.”
Audi is trying to bring some awareness of electric and automated driving to the mainstream with the RSQ e-tron. “An international espionage story with future technologies that can save the world is the perfect match for the Audi brand,” says Giovanni Perosino, vice president of Marketing Communication at Audi AG. “Similar to our cars, fun, innovation and performance are key elements of the storyline.”
“Audi and Fox have been great collaborators over the years and we’re thrilled to evolve our relationship, bringing Audi into the world of animation for the first time. This project was the perfect opportunity to highlight Audi’s e-tron technology and give our intrepid spy, Lance Sterling, his own signature spy mobile”, said Erin Williams, vice president, Marketing Partnerships for Twentieth Century Fox Film.
The Audi RSQ e-tron is a very cool looking concept and the perfect car for a high-tech super spy. It looks like a mid-engine supercar, with an awesome digital cockpit and the “e-tron” badging fron and center, on the lower front lip. So not only does it look cool, it’s a huge advertisement for the Audi e-tron brand. You can be sure we’ll be seeing this new movie.
