When people think of hatchbacks, the cars that usually spring to mind are the Volkswagen Golf, Honda Civic, and other similarly sized five-door models. However, there are far bigger, luxurious, and more powerful models that fall into the hatchback category. We’re talking about the likes of the Audi RS7 Sportback and the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. These two, together with the Porsche Panamera Turbo, are arguably the most exciting hatchbacks the automotive world has ever seen.
The RS7 and AMG GT63 S met on the drag strip to settle which of the two large-and-in-charge hatchbacks has the edge in a quarter-mile run. Although they both have V8 engines, all-wheel drive, and automatic transmissions, one of them is significantly more powerful and expensive. We’re talking about the AMG, which packs a colossal 639 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) whereas the Audi Sport model has to settle for 600 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft).
As impressive as these output numbers are, we have to keep in mind both cars weigh just about as much as the moon. The ones tested by Carwow tipped the scales at 2,120 kilograms (4,673 pounds) in the case of the AMG, thus making it a tad porkier than the 2,065 kg (4,552 lbs) the Sportback has to carry around.
The first drag race saw the RS7 take the lead at the start due to the slow reaction of Mat Watson driving the AMG, but it still wasn’t enough for the Audi to claim the win. The GT63 S not only erased the gap without much effort, but pulled ahead and took an undisputed win. The difference between the two in the second drag race was even more obvious as the AMG’s optimal start allowed it to beat the RS7 with ease.
The extra horsepower and torque of the GT63 S was demonstrated furthermore in the rolling race, making the RS7 look rather slow, which it really isn’t if you compare it to most cars out there. Then again, the AMG is not your typical hatchback considering it’s effectively the most powerful Mercedes on sale today, outside of the AMG One hypercar.

The Audi did manage to win one duel – the brake test from 70 mph to zero. The situation might’ve been different if the RS7 had the standard steel brakes instead of the optional ceramic setup.
Overall, the RS7 had to settle for second place, but when you consider the massive price difference between the two, it’s not really a surprise. A fair fight would be with a potential Performance version Audi might launch further down the line. The Four Rings have hinted they might electrify their biggest Sportback model, so we’d be curious to see how a higher-spec RS7 would fare in a drag race against the AMG GT63 S.
