The very interesting and promising Audi RS5 TDI concept is being showcased in this video and it could turn out to be a production model sometime in the near future. Although it looks virtually the same as the regular RS5, this one has been equipped with a V6 3.0 TDI twin-turbo engine featuring a “supplemental turbocharger” allowing the high-performance coupe provide “staggering power” right away.
This electric turbocharger is being powered by a small lithium-ion battery pack and makes use of a separate 48-volt electrical system working together with a regular 12-volt electrical system through a DC/DC converter. After Audi’s engineers made all these extensive modifications, they were able to squeeze 385 PS (283 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque from the engine and the output can be had from as low as 1,250 rpm (up to 2,000 rpm).
Thanks to these high power numbers, the Audi RS5 TDI concept sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4 seconds, to 124 mph (200 km/h) in less than 16 seconds before hitting a maximum speed of 174 mph (280 km/h). This is a diesel after all so it’s no wonder the concept has remained quite thrifty as it has an average fuel consumption of less than 5.3 liters / 100 km.
It’s not known at this moment whether The Audi RS5 TDI concept will go into production but it is believed the engine will make its debut in the next generation Q7.
