The Audi RS4 Avant participated in a drag race against a brand new BMW M3 F80. The Audi is nearing the end of its lifecycle while the M3 is a fresh contender in the segment so a comparison between the two might not be entirely relevant. While the RS4 Avant weighs 1,795 kg, the M3 is significantly lighter at 1,595 kg. However, some of the weight difference has to do with the Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system while the M3 is a rear-wheel drive car.
In terms of power, these are two very different cars taking into account the RS4 Avant is motivated by a naturally aspirated V8 4.2-liter whereas the M3 has a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder 3.0-liter. While the Audi has more horsepower (450 HP vs 431 HP), its Bavarian arch rival has substantially more torque (550 Nm vs 430 Nm).
As for the drag race, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the Audi RS4 Avant pulls ahead at the start of the race as it has the advantage of an all-wheel drive system. However, it fails to keep the lead as the M3’s torque kicks in and allows the BMW to triumph.
Chances are the next generation RS4 Avant will adopt a downsized turbocharged engine just like the M3 so expect more power wrapped around in a lighter package.
