VIDEO: 2022 Audi RS3 Sportback vs Mercedes-AMG A45 S

This new Audi RS3 Sportback is one of the very best cars Audi Sport has put out in years. It may even be the very best Audi Sport model on sale at the moment, potentially better than even the RS6 and R8. Why? Because its rear-drive-biased all-wheel drive system, short wheelbase, newfound chassis balance and steering feel, and punchy five-cylinder engine all combine to make a near-perfect package. However, the only aspect of the new RS3 that isn’t massively improved over the outgoing the RS3 is its power.

With 401 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from its 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, the new Audi RS3 makes only one more horsepower than the previous car. Does that make it fast enough to take on the current hot-hatch king, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S?

In this new video from Joe Achilles, we get to see a drag race between the two cars. During his review of the RS3, Achilles was effusive about the new Audi, claiming it to be the best car Audi Sport makes. But can it handle the mighty AMG?

The AMG is more powerful, with its 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 421 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. However, even with both cars launching about as well as they could, the Audi RS3 jumped the AMG off the line. Then, not only did it beat the AMG off the line, it beat the AMG in the drag race by several car lengths. It just never stopped pulling, which is immensely impressive considering its lower on-paper horsepower.

After the drag race, Achilles put the two cars together in a couple of rolling races, in which things get a bit more interesting. The RS3’s engine has a bit of lag, which does hurt it in certain circumstances but its immense turbocharged punch and all-wheel drive grip help it in others. So check it out below.
