VIDEO: Audi RS3 Sportback Takes on Competitors in New Drag Race

This new Audi RS3 Sportback has already proven itself to be far faster than expected. Despite having less power than one of its main rivals, the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, it was actually faster in a recent drag race. But what about when it races against a more varied group of competitors?

In this new drag race video from Carwow, we get to see the new Audi RS3 Sportback take on the aforementioned AMG, the BMW M2 Competition, Porsche Cayman GTS, and Volkswagen Golf R. Only the AMG and the Golf R are true competitors for the RS3, as the M2 Competition is a two-door coupe and the Cayman GTS is a mid-engine sports car. Still, the RS3 is capable of punching above its weight class, so can it really take them all on?

Under the hood, the Audi RS3 Sportback uses a 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine to make 401 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It also gets a new all-wheel drive system with a trick rear differential, which helps it put all of that power down. And it shows, as it rocketed off the line in this new drag race video, winning both of the first two standing quarter-mile drag races with ease. It actually ran a 12.0 second flat quarter-mile, which is impressive for a hot hatch.

In the rolling races, it wasn’t as dominant, as the two lighter sports cars — the BMW and the Porsche — won those. However, the RS3 did compete very well with the rest of its usual competition.

What this video proved is that the new Audi RS3 Sportback is a mightily impressive little car. Not only is it seriously fast, faster than its specs would suggest, but it’s also more fun to drive than ever before, as proved by Carwow’s Mat Watson before the drag races. I can’t wait to test it out here in the ‘States.
