VIDEO: Audi RS3 Takes on BMW M240i at the Track

To be perfectly honest, the RS3 was never intended to be a track weapon. Every generation of RS3 has been a great daily driver; something that’s fast, practical, capable on a twisty road, usable in all weather, and stylish. Now, though, the new Audi RS3 is all of those things but it’s also pretty handy on the track. But is it good enough to beat a BMW M240i?

In this new video from Sport Auto, we get to see both the new Audi RS3 Sedan and the BMW M240i Coupe go head-to-head at Hockenheim. Both cars had the same driver, the same weather, and the same temperature. So which was fastest?

The Audi RS3 Sedan is the more powerful of the two cars. Being a proper Audi Sport model — versus the BMW M240i, which is an M Performance car and not a full-blown M car — the RS3 uses a 2.5 liter turbocharged five-cylinder to make 401 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. While the M240i uses a 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-six to make 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. Both cars use automatic transmissions — the Audi gets a seven-speed dual-clutch, while the BMW uses an eight-speed auto — and both are all-wheel drive. Both also have clever rear differentials.

They both have different tires, though. Audi’s tire in this video is a Bridgestone Potenza Sport, while the BMW uses a Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. We don’t know what the Bridgestone is like to use but we do know that the Michelin PS4s is excellent.

Oddly, despite Audi’s claim of the contrary, the RS3 actually understeers quite a bit. Chunk it into a corner too hard and, despite that clever diff and all-wheel drive system, it still pushes like an old-school Audi. All while the BMW M240i seemed so much more balance and composed.

The Audi RS3 finished a lap of Hockenheim in 2:00, which sounds pretty good, all things considered.
