At a recent trip to the Estoril race track in Portugal for the new Audi R8, head of Audi Quattro GmbH, Heinz Hollerweger, talked about how the RS line of cars is not tied to the S line of cars and how there will be more RS models coming.
While BMW and Mercedes-Benz offer watered down versions of their M and AMG cars, respectively, Hollerweger says that Quattro will not combine RS models with lesser S models. “They are not so near our RS models,” to which he continued with “Quattro is the very top and a class of its own, derived from racing.”. That last bit is important, as Hollerweger clearly wants all Audi RS models and the R8 to feel derived from racing cars, not just tuned up street cars, “superior powertrain technology, aerodynamics, and lightweight materials.”
Hollerweger also went on to say that new technologies aren’t out of the question and is excited about the R8 eTron, which uses two electric motors instead of the normal R8’s monster V10. He even went on to say that other future RS models might get hybrid or fully electric powertrains, but nothing in the immediate future.
Hollerweger also claims that the Audi RS Q3 went over so well that the company is looking into further RS SUV models. This means we could very well see an RS Q5 and RS Q7 in the future or, with the recent news that Audi might be greatly expanding it’s lineup, an RS Q6 and Q8.
