Audi’s fastest and most powerful SUV has been tested at full throttle by the folks over at AutoTopNL. They’re known for taking fast cars, both old and new, at the Autobahn for a top speed run on the unrestricted sections of Germany’s glorious highway. It was the RS Q8’s turn to undergo the high-speed test, which we’d say it passed with flying colors.
It’s worth mentioning this particular example had the optional dynamic package, which unlocks a top speed of 189.5 mph (305 km/h). That represents a significant increase compared to the standard model’s electronically capped 155.3 mph (250 km/h). While the Audi RS Q8 featured in the adjacent video didn’t hit its maximum velocity during the Autobahn run, it did get extremely close.
As with virtually all SUVs regardless of make and model, Audi Sport’s range-topping Q model doesn’t have the best drag coefficient due to its tall body. That causes problems at higher speeds as you can see the RS Q8 takes its sweet time getting closer to the 300-km/h mark. On the other hand, it does share its top speed with the Lamborghini Urus, a mechanically related SUV that costs nearly $90,000 more.
It’s an impressive feat when you take into consideration the sheer size and weight of the performance behemoth. It tips the scales a whopping 2,315 kilograms (5,103 pounds) and yet it has a top speed comparable to supercars from not that long ago. It’s still a luxury SUV at the end of the day, so it offers a high level of comfort and practicality wrapped up in a stylish package.
Even if you are not in the SUV crowd, you have to admit super SUVs like the RS Q8, Urus, and the Cayenne Turbo are some of the world’s most versatile vehicles.
