Literally no one buys an Audi RS Q8 to go off-road. Sure, it has decent ground clearance and Quattro all-wheel drive but it also has massive wheels with skinny, low-profile tires and is geared more for performance on-road driving. But what happens if you try and take it off-road and, more than that, put it up against a genuine off-road-ready crossover like the Dacia Duster? Find out in this new video from Carwow.
It’s honestly a funny but interesting test. The Audi RS Q8 is more than five times as expensive than the Duster but it does come with a lot more. Under the hood is a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque (800 Nm). While the Dacia Duster uses a 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine that makes 115 horsepower and 191 lb-ft (290 Nm). However, the Dacia has just as much ground clearance but with better off-road tires.
First up, Carwow’s Mat Watson puts the the two cars head-to-head in a drag race… up hill… in mud. So not exactly the RS Q8’s wheelhouse. However, shockingly it actually won. I thought it would just endlessly spin its tires in the mud but, while it spun a bit, Quattro all-wheel drive really managed the power and got it up the hill quickly, winning the race. And that was with Mat Watson slowing down at the end, so as to not bottom out over the crest.
Subsequent tests were a bit trickier, putting both cars through some genuinely difficult off-road terrain. Obviously, there’s a cost/human element to this test, as Watson intentionally takes it easy with the RS Q8, so as to not scuff or scrape it but that also proves that it’s too big, too low, and too heavy for off-roading. Though, it is actually surprising how well it fares at it, despite being so big, heavy, and posh. Check the video out below.
