Audi RS Q8 Loses Out on Motor Trend’s Performance Car of the Year

At the moment, Motor Trend is conducting its 2021 Performance Car of the Year awards. Among the cars considered for PCOTY was the Audi RS Q8 and it’s not hard to see why. With a damn-near 600 horsepower twin-turbo V8, the RS Q8 is shockingly fast for an SUV and handles better than you’d think something of its size and weight could. However, unfortunately for the RS Q8, it wasn’t deemed a finalist.

There’s no question, the Audi RS Q8 is impressive. Its 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 makes 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, which helps it get from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds. When you consider the RS Q8 weighs over 5,200 lbs, that’s shockingly impressive. In terms of performance, the RS Q8 whomped the other heavy SUV in the test, the ALPINA XB7. It also ran the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds, at 116.2 mph. So, yea, it’s seriously fast.

And yet, it still didn’t make it as a finalist. Why, though, when it performed so well at the track?

Despite being bonkers quick and remarkably handy on a skid pad, the Audi RS Q8 isn’t exactly thrilling to drive. It’s too big, too heavy, and too vague for that. It also doesn’t ride as well as MT had hoped, potentially ruined by its massive 23″ wheels, which are standard.

Which is a shame because there’s a lot to like about the Audi RS Q8, aside from its performance. It looks great, has a lovely interior, and a surprising amount of interior space, too. So there’s a lot going for the RS Q8, as a do-it-all, everyday performance SUV for its customers. But this test isn’t for customers, it’s designed to figure out which of the market’s newest performance cars is best and, while impressive, the Audi RS Q8 just isn’t that. So it doesn’t make it as a finalist but, when you compare the cars that did make it to the RS Q8, you suddenly realize why the big Audi could never make it.
