I’m not a huge fan of performance SUVs, as I far prefer small sports cars, but even I love the Audi RS Q8. Its power is monstrous, it looks great, and for a time it even held the lap record for SUVs at the Nürburgring, so it’s a genuinely good performer, despite its weight. However, is it good enough to take on an SUV that’s far more expensive and that comes from a brand more known for performance cars? Auto Express recently found out by pitting the RS Q8 against the Aston Martin DBX.
For some context, the Aston Martin DBX is the brand’s first-ever SUV. It might also be the best looking SUV I’ve ever seen and boasts a stunning cabin. However, it’s less powerful than the RS Q8, making 542 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque from its AMG-sourced 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8. That’s quite a bit less than the 591 horsepower and 590 lb-ft from Audi RS Q8’s own 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8. The Audi is a few hundred pounds heavier, though.
In this new video, Auto Express’ Steve Sutcliffe laps both cars around the Bedford Autodrome, to see which is quickest. Prior to lapping them, though, he gave both cars a bit of a review, to see what they’re like to drive. While the Aston Martin DBX is a lovely car, with a fantastic cabin and very Aston-like handling, he actually seemed to like the much cheaper Audi more. But which one was quicker?
On the track, the Audi RS Q8 crushed the Aston Martin DBX, setting a lap time of 1:21.8, versus the Aston’s 1:24.1. On a tight track like Bedford, those few seconds are huge. More interestingly, Sutcliffe also tested a few other very impressive performance cars on the same day, in the same conditions, to see how they compared to the RS Q8 and the results were shocking.
