An Audi R8 V8 was pitted against the brand new BMW M3 F80 by the crew at GTBoard. The current generation R8 is on its way to a well-deserved retirement but that hasn’t stopped GTBoard to take the V8-powered variant of the supercar and conduct a drag race with the latest BMW M3. The R8 in question was built in 2008 and comes with the naturally aspirated V8 4.2-liter engine coupled to a six-speed manual transmission.
While the Audi R8 V8 has 420 bhp, the BMW M3 Sedan (F80) packs 425 bhp from its turbocharged straight-six 3.0-liter engine and as you can see from the attached video the Bavarian high-performance sedan managed to easily outpace the R8 in a rolling start drag race.
The second generation Audi R8 is expected to be launched sometime next year and will retain the V8 4.2 and V10 5.2-liter naturally aspirated engines which will likely receive a power bump. Later on during the car’s life , a smaller turbocharged motor will be added to the range, with all of them working with a quattro AWD setup and a revised dual-clutch 7-speed transmission.
The new Audi R8 V8 and V10 versions will largely share the same platform as the Lamborghini Huracan which should enable a considerable weight loss while the design will be evolutionary compared to the outgoing R8.
