After seeing the RS4 Avant being pitted against the BMW M3 F80, now we take a look at the Audi R8 V8 dueling the high-performance sedan from Bavaria. These are two entirely different cars as they fit in different segments and while one of them is nearing the end of its lifecycle, the other has just been recently introduced in showrooms.
The Audi R8 is the old player with a naturally aspirated V8 4.2-liter engine pushing out 430 bhp and 317 lb-ft of torque whereas the BMW M3 F80 is the new contender with a smaller six-cylinder 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine rated at 431 bhp and 406 lb-ft. Aside from having significantly different engines, there’s also a discrepancy as far as the gearbox is concerned since the Audi has a six-speed manual while the M3 comes with a dual clutch seven-speed automatic transmission.
As you can see from the video, the BMW M3 F80 has no problem beating the Audi R8 V8 with little effort thanks to a latest generation turbocharged engine which not only makes it quicker but also lowers fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
We will have to wait until next year to see what Audi is cooking up with the second generation R8 that will carry over the 4.2-liter V8 and 5.2-liter V10 naturally aspirated engines but these will likely get more power and will be wrapped around in a lighter body thanks to a platform sourced from the new Lamborghini Huracan.
