Audi R8 V10 Plus is an EVO Car of the Year Contender

This past year has been a very special one for car enthusiasts. In this history of the automobile, I’m not sure there’s been a year quite like 2016, where so many driver-focused cars made their debut. They say the sports car is dying, but evidence of the contrary lies in this past year alone. One of those cars, the Audi R8 V10 Plus, is one of the best supercars on the road and is one of EVO Magazine’s Car of the Year Contenders.

In a test that features everything from small hot hatches to bona fide supercars, being in this company is being among the elite in the auto industry. It doesn’t matter the style of car, the company that makes it or even its price. The only the that matters is the size of the grin on the driver’s face. The Audi R8 V10 Plus puts a pretty big grin on its driver’s face. That’s why it’s hear.

There were several EVO testers, as well as freelancers, who participated as judges in this test. Most of them had great things to say about the Audi R8. It did garner some criticism, though. For instance, it can feel a bit uninspiring. That’s been the main complaint of the R8 from every enthusiasts since its debut. Being that Audi tries to give the R8 some civil driving habits, as well as making it a proper madman, it can feel a bit dull at low speeds. And its steering could use some life.

However, its engine and powertrain are pure brilliance, as its 5.2 liter V10 engine is a work of mechanical art. With a throaty burble at low speeds and a shrieking wail at high-revs, the Audi R8’s engine is one of the most charismatic on the market. It reminds us why we love naturally-aspirated engines. Its rapid-shifting dual-clutch gearbox is also brilliant and possibly best in class. It also has sensational grip, making it unbelievably quick.

Unfortunately, those traits are not enough to place the Audi R8 on EVO’s podium. That’s not so much a knock against the R8, but a testament to the quality of cars in the test. The top three cars placed as such: McLaren 570S in third, Volkswagen GTI Clubsport in second and the absolutely brilliant Porsche 911 R in first. With cars like the Audi R8 V10 Plus, BMW M4 GTS, BMW M2 and Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe not placing, you can see just how excellent those top three cars are.
