British magazine Auto Express decided to pit the Audi R8 V10 version against the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe. While the R8 is just about to be retired, the S63 AMG is fresh on the market so it’s interesting to see the two dueling in a drag race, especially since Audi’s supercar is naturally aspirated whereas the AMG coupe has a twin-turbo setup.
You’d think the R8 would lose the race but as a matter of fact it took the win with a time of 27.24, thus making it a tad quicker than the S63 AMG Coupe which posted a 27.51 time. The only cars that managed to beat the R8 in the drag races organized on a runway in Edinburgh were the Ferrari 458 Spider (26.62), Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series (26.54), Lamborghini Aventador Roadster 50th Anniversary Edition (24.97) and a Mercedes F1 car which finished the drag race in only 20.20 seconds.
The Audi R8 V10 version will probably improve its time when Auto Express will get their hands on the second generation of the supercar scheduled to come out in 2015. The model is expected to adopt an evolution of the 5.2-liter V10 engine with more than 570 bhp offered in the highest application of the engine such as the freshly announced R8 Competition. Corroborated with a rumored weight loss and some gearbox tweaks, the new R8 should be an absolute rocket.
