It was back in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit when we saw the R8 TDI Le Mans concept and now according to a recent report a production Audi R8 TDI is slated to come out sometime in 2017. The report was issued by Automobile Magazine and they say the diesel-powered supercar will be equipped with a V8 4.0-liter TDI or a larger V10 5.0-liter TDI engine which is currently being developed for various Bentley models.
There aren’t any details about the power of these engines but we remind you the aforementioned R8 TDI Le Mans concept offered a more than generous 500 PS and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. According to the same report, the next generation Audi R8 will also be available with a V8 4.0-liter twin-turbo gasoline engine rated at 460 bhp and 500 Nm along with a V10 5.2-liter generating 540 bhp and 539 Nm of torque.
Later during the car’s lifespan, there will be an R8 V10 Plus offering no less than 600 bhp and 559 Nm of torque. Besides these gasoline engines and the rumored Audi R8 TDI, Ingolstadt’s flagship supercar will also receive a smaller displacement engine featuring turbocharging which will cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without affecting the car’s performances.
A full reveal of the 2015 Audi R8 is expected in the months to come, likely before the end of the year.
