The Smithsonian Channel is dedicated to interesting and informative television and its “Supercar Superbuild” show is one of its best. Essentially, the show takes a specific supercar and shows you the factory where it’s built, how its built and its impressive technologies. The latest supercar to be featured on this show is the Audi R8 and it will air tonight at 9:00 PM EST.
Most people don’t think of Audi when they think of supercars. Instead, brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren come to mind, brands that have long, prestigious histories making race cars and supercars. However, the Audi R8 is a bonafide supercar and one of the best one the road. It features stunning good looks, a mid-engine layout and a mechanical soundtrack that will send chills down your spine. So it’s the real deal and we’re glad to see it getting recognition on the Smithsonian Channel tonight.
The Audi R8 is build in Neckarsulm, Germany and is made by the Audi Sport division. It’s built on an all-aluminum architecture shared with the Lamborghini Huracan, a car with which is also shares its engine. Said engine is a 5.2 liter naturally-aspirated V10 that makes 540 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. There’s also an Audi R8 V10 Plus variant that makes 610 hp and 413 lb-ft. The latter is capable of 0-60 mph in under three seconds, while the former does the sprint in 3.5 seconds. The V10 Plus is also capable of over 200 mph.
We’re obviously big fans of the Audi R8 and how it transformed the four-ringed brand from a maker of quirky, fast sedans and wagons into a real player in the world of performance cars. While not from an Italian brand, the Audi R8 is a proper supercar and one of the best on the road. Check it out tonight on the Smithsonian.
