A recent report states the second generation Audi R8 will eventually receive a turbocharged five-cylinder gasoline engine. This decision has allegedly been taken as a measure to avoid the big engine taxes applied in Asia and the engine in question could be the 2.5-liter unit from the recently unveiled TT clubsport turbo concept where it delivers 600 PS and 650 Nm thanks to e-turbo tech.
It is believed the same engine will also finds its way inside the Lamborghini Huracan and it’s not known at this point whether these versions will be sold outside Asia. It should be mentioned Quattro GmbH engineering boss Stephan Reil declared earlier this month that a lesser engine project for the Audi R8 supercar has not been approved yet so even if it will get the green-light, it will be a while until we will see a five-cylinder R8 or Huracan.
As a final note, any car benefitting from an electric turbocharger would command a 48-volt electrical system and a bigger lithium-ion battery which would not only increase the vehicle’s curb weight but it would also jack up the price tag.
